A migration center in Brandenburg’s Doberlug-Kirchhain was expecting to admit local forces and their families evacuated from Kabul after the Taliban takeover, as filmed on Thursday.

The facility which has about a thousand of places for migrants and asylum seekers prepared rooms for the first group of evacuees who landed in Frankfurt am Main and were being registered there.

The arrival was postponed from afternoon to overnight because of the amount of paper work.

The Afghans were expected to stay in the center until next week before being sent to another region.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Olaf Jansen, Head of migration department of Brandenburg (German): “The Afghan local forces will start from Frankfurt, Frankfurt-am-Main, then will arrive here pretty late, around 10, they will leave bus here, and in the tents that you saw they will get tested. We want to be sure that they didn’t get infected on the way. Then we will take care of first needs, for example diapers for children, hygiene cares and similar things. Then they will get an explanation in their native language why are they here, for how long they will stay and so on.”

SOT, Olaf Jansen, Head of migration department of Brandenburg (German): “Then they will be brought to their rooms as soon as possible, in the rooms they have hygiene bags with toothbrushes, flip-flops, and soap and other things. If someone needs clothes then we can take care of that as well. We will see what they need when they arrive.”

SOT, Olaf Jansen, Head of migration department of Brandenburg (German): “At the moment we expect around 100 people, plus or minus, but at the moment it’s not confirmed how many local forces will arrive here, it’s not clear at the moment. There are many people to deal with in Frankfurt, there arrive a lot of different people with different planes, relatives of German nationals, relatives of nationals of neighbouring European countries, and apart from local forces also other people that we in danger because of Taliban, and they need to be separated so the numbers are not clear yet.”
