The German Parliament voted by a large majority in favour of extending the Bundeswehr’s deployment in Iraq, following debates between MPs in Berlin on Friday.

German foreign and defence ministers continued discussions on the government’s proposal to extend the mission for nine months, with the ceiling of personnel to remain unchanged at 500 soldiers and 73 million euros in additional costs.

Members of parliament mentioned the importance of a continued presence in the region to combat terrorist threats from groups such as the Islamic State.

“Terror can quickly play a role for us again, and to be able to end this tomorrow we must not give up halfway, but we should stay engaged, also to further empower the Iraqi forces on the ground to act on their in this confrontation,” said Michael Mueller, MP for the SPD.

The government coalition of the FDP, Greens, and SPD supported the proposal, as did the CDU, which was responsible for it in the previous Bundestag legislature.

“The challenge remains enormous and therefore the objective of the compromise to promote stability and security is correct,” said Sara Nanni of the Greens, who previously voted against the mandate in opposition but now support it.

Alternative for Germany (AfD) and The Left voted against the motion, which passed with 553 votes.
