A closing roll call is set to be held in Berlin on Wednesday, October 13, to mark the end of Germany’s 20-year-long mission in Afghanistan.

The ceremony will take place on the grounds of the Federal Ministry of Defence in presence of senior country’s officials. Germany’s Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Federal Minister of Defence Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and Bundestag President Wolfgang Schauble are expected to deliver remarks, whilst Chancellor Merkel will attend as a guest.

The deployment of the German Armed Forces in Afghanistan has come to an end with the completion of the military evacuation operation on August 27, 2021. 59 German soldiers died in Afghanistan with 35 of them killed in combat or as a result of militant attacks.
