Germany: CDU's Norbert Rottgen announces his candidacy for party's chairman in Berlin

Dr Norbert Rottgen from the Cristian Democratic Union (CDU) announced his candidacy for the party’s chairman at a press conference in Berlin, Friday.

Rottgen highlighted the conservative party’s need for ‘renewal,’ attracting and retaining the middle class, and forging stronger ties with the Cristian Social Union (CSU), their sister party in Bavaria.

During the presser, Rottgen introduced 39-year-old Franziska Hoppermann, an MP from Hamburg as a possible general secretary if elected.

The CDU members will vote online or by mail on December 4-16 with the winner to be officially elected at a federal party conference in Hanover on January 21-22, 2022.
