Germany: Die Linke calls for good relationship with Russia, China and US in Munich campaign rally

Die Linke co-Chancellor candidate Janine Wissler highlighted the party’s commitment to climate change and slammed CDU candidate Armin Laschet, during a campaign rally in Munich on Friday.

Dietmar Bartsch and Gregor Gysi also criticised the CDU and other high-ranking CDU/CSU party officials, amid allegations of corruption relating to the coronavirus pandemic.

“These massive deals during the pandemic where representatives stuck hundreds of thousands into their own pockets” Bartsch said.

“Or Jens Spahn, who held a dinner during the worst part of the pandemic and every guest had to pay 9,999 euros and donate to his campaign,” he continued.

Gregor Gysi called for dialogue between the United States, China and Russia.

“We must remember Willy Brandt,” Gysi exclaimed, gathering inspiration from the former West German chancellor, “he said change through cooperation something I saw myself in the GDR how things changed through this cooperation, and we must do exactly that.”

Currently polling just above the 5 percent threshold to enter the German Bundestag, Die Linke could find themselves in a decisive position in coalition building.

While neither party has explicitly ruled out a coalition with Die Linke, Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned against a government run by the left.

Germany’s federal elections will be held on September 26.

What kind of scandal is that. Or Andreas Scheuer, who decreased tolls by millions of euros, what kind of understanding is that for his job? Or Jens Spahn, who held a dinner during the worst part of the pandemic and every guest had to pay 9,999 euro and donate to his campaign. That has nothing to do with Christianity. That is ‘FC Enrichment’ and we as ‘Team Solidarity’ stand against that completely.”

SOT, Gregor Gysi, Bundestag representative for Die Linke (German): “Germany has a geostrategic interest to have a good relationship with the US, to China and to Russia. Germany does not have a good relationship with the US, or with China or Russia. With the USA, they are continuously on the ropes, that is not a good relationship. A good relationship is when you can speak to one another eye to eye that is the requirement for a good relationship and then you will be taken seriously. You have to have the power to say no and not simply run back and forth. With China, the federal government tries to have economic relations and no political relations, that doesn’t work. You need to have a dialogue, for example with the situation of Muslims in China, you need to develop trust before you can change things. And Russia. Russia is a European country. Security and peace in Europe is not possible without Russia. It is in our interest to build a basis of trust with Russia and a good relationship. That does not mean though we should be uncritical of Putin, rather we must remember Willy Brandt, why that is my job I don’t know, why (Heiko) Maas doesn’t know who Willy Brandt was. I don’t understand, and he said change through cooperation something I saw myself in the GDR how things changed through this cooperation, and we must do exactly that. If we want to accomplish anything we need dialogue and not a permanent state of confrontation and permanent sanctions.”
