From the possibility of a diplomatic presence in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan to new revelations about the Pegasus spyware, the federal press conference in Berlin covered a range of issues in Berlin on Wednesday.
“Regarding the question of diplomatic presence, many things have been said in the last days including by the Foreign Minister. Now it is about deciding the interaction with the Taliban, how to be able to cooperate for example in regards to humanitarian aid and the question of a diplomatic presence is out of question for now,” said the foreign ministry spokesperson Andrea Sasse.
German Interior Ministry spokesperson Marek Wede discussed new revelations about the alleged use of the Pegasus software by the German federal police saying, “Now as in the past, we cannot comment on which specific technical tools the security authorities employ. This has been the case, this is the case and it will be the case in the future.’’
The German Foreign Office discussed the ‘transit agreement’ between the USA and Germany to accommodate Afghan evacuees en route to US soil in the US base of Ramstein in Germany. Also, the spokesperson of the German army added, that the Armed Forces were collaborating in bringing Afghan citizens to Albania in the framework of a common NATO operation, in which the Germans brought 28 Afghans by air to the southeastern European country.

SOT, Marek Wede, German Interior Ministry spokesperson (German): “We have already commented on ‘Pegasus’, I would like to repeat, what we have said in the past. The case is, that the law clearly determines the cases of application and the requirements of a technical observation. As you know, in Germany we have high requirements for this.’‘

SOT, Marek Wede, German Interior Ministry spokesperson (German): “Now as in the past, we cannot comment on which specific technical tools the security authorities employ. This has been the case, this is the case and it will be the case in the future.’‘

SOT, David Helmbold, Defence Ministry spokesperson (German): “There is the NATO operation which is called [“Allied Solice”] and within the frameworks of this NATO operation we were asked for support. There was one flight [on September 1] with a ‘C 160 Transall’ in which 38 Afghani nationals were transported. [They were transported to] Albania after a request by the NATO in support for the NATO operation [Allied Solice].’’

SOT, Andrea Sasse, Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): “He [Foreign Minister Heiko Maas] clearly expressed that future engagements by the Western States will depend on the behaviour of the Taliban. The announcement of an interim government without the participation of other groups and yesterday’s violence against protesters and journalists in Kabul are not the signals that show optimism.’‘

SOT, Andrea Sasse, Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): “Our focus was to evacuate as many people at risk as possible from Kabul under the very very difficult conditions. That is why the federal government has agreed with the USA, that especially the airbase ‘Ramstein’ can be temporarily used for the transit of refugees from Afghanistan.’‘

SOT, Andrea Sasse, Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): “Part of the agreement - it is a transit agreement - is, that the Afghan people destined for the USA will be flown out to the USA or third countries within a few days. Again, it is about Afghan people that are destined for the USA.’‘

SOT, Andrea Sasse, Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): “Regarding the question of diplomatic presence, many things have been said in the last days including by the Foreign Minister. Now it is about deciding the interaction with the Taliban, how to be able to cooperate for example in regards to humanitarian aid and the question of a diplomatic presence is out of question for now.’‘
