German Chancellor Angela Merkel took aim at Social Democratic Party (SPD) chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz for his unwillingness to denounce a possible coalition with the left-wing party Die Linke at a press conference with Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz in Berlin, on Tuesday.
“With me as chancellor there would never be a coalition where Die Linke is a part of it, and if Olaf Scholz shares this or not remains open,” Merkel said, “in this case there is an enormous difference between me and him for the future of Germany.”
Merkel also welcomed Scholz’s recent praise of the current government coalition, in which he serves as vice-chancellor and finance minister.
“I am pleased that Olaf Scholz recognises what we accomplished in the grand coalition and I feel we have done a lot with one another. That the SPD is speaking positively on this was not always the case,” Merkel added.
Scholz and the SPD have drawn level with, or even ahead of, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in recent polls, with less than a month to go before election day on Sunday, September 26.

SOT, Sebastian Kurz, Austrian Chancellor (German): SOT Sebastian Kurz, Chancellor of Austria (German): “In Austria, thank God, we not only have a very strong winter season, but actually also a very strong summer season. This year we have had very, very good experiences with the 3G strategy - tested, vaccinated or recovered - and with a large number of tests we have actually been able to keep the infection process under control very well. We’re a small country of 9 million people and we have 2 million or 2.5 million tests a week at our peak. We have made a free offer available - not only for Austrians, but also for tourists - in test streets, in pharmacies and elsewhere. In this respect, I would say: the strategy has worked very well so far. We actually feel well prepared for the winter season. The more people vaccinated, the better. This applies regardless of tourism, but of course also for tourism.”
