Germany: SPD candidate Scholz opens election campaign in Bochum

The Social Democrats’ candidate to replace Chancellor Angela Merkel, Olaf Scholz, kicked off his election campaign in Bochum on Saturday.
In a roughly one-hour long speech, the SPD candidate and Merkel’s current Finance Minister underlined his stances on social housing, minimum wage and the pandemic. Hundreds of supporters could be seen attending the rally.
According to the latest polling by the Insa Institute, the Union bloc remains in first place on 26 percent, with the SPD and Green Party tied for second at 18 percent.
The next federal election will be held on September 26, with state elections also taking place in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on the same day.
