Newly elected Mayor of Berlin Franziska Giffey was sworn in at the Berlin House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The Berlin House of Representatives has elected the former Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and SPD politician Franziska Giffey as the new governing mayor of Germany’s capital. As President of the Berlin House of Representatives Dennis Buchner announced, 84 MPs voted for Giffey, 52 against her and two abstained.

The Berlin coalition of the SPD, the Greens and the Left have a total of 92 members. For her election as head of government, the politician needed at least 74 votes.

The swearing-in ceremony took place after the three parties signed the coalition papers to officiate their joint government in Berlin.

SOT, Dennis Buchner, President of house of representatives Berlin (German): “You are the duly elected mayor of Berlin. Congratulations. However, the office may only be exercised after the inauguration and therefore, Ms Giffey, may I ask you to come to the front and I ask you all to get up from your seats if possible.”
