Germans should remember the atrocities that were perpetrated against Eastern European Jews during WWII, urged German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin on Sunday.

Speaking during an event dedicated to the people’s day of mourning (German: Volkstrauertag) in the German parliament, Steinmeier stated “one name. Auschwitz. It is the epitomy of the murder of millions of European Jews. However, our memory does not possess a map showing the countless other places where Germans carried out crimes beyond the extermination camps - in Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and other places in Eastern Europe. Our memory does not have such a map, although it should. As in these places it would find the mass graves of Polish, Belarussian, Ukrainian, and Russian Jews who were shot in the so-called Holocaust through bullets. They were buried in the silent ground with no names.”

An annual observation of Volkstrauertag takes place in the German Bundestag led by the President of Germany holding a speech with the Chancellor, the cabinet and the diplomatic corps present. The event is usually held on the Sunday nearest 16 November, i.e. in the period from 13 November to 19 November.

The Germans and their allies and collaborators perpetrated mass shootings that sometimes killed tens of thousands. Among the largest mass shootings conducted in the first months of Operation Barbarossa, were the massacres at Kamenets-Podolsk and Babyn Yar which took the lives of 23,600 and 33,771 Jews, respectively, while 42,000 were shot during Operation Harvest Festival in Poland.

Hundreds of thousands non-Jews were also executed at the mentioned and other sites across Eastern Europe, with the most infamous being Fort IX in Kaunas, the Rumbula and Bikernieki Forests in Riga, the Ponary near Vilnius and Maly Trostenets near Minsk.

Accepting it must not mean that we avoid the conflicts of the present, and with those who bear heavy responsibility for them. Because of that, this day - the day of national mourning - is an important day. We have to overcome the silence, including the silence of many parts of our society towards our army. This is one of the tasks on such a day.”
