Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer visited the Central Memorial for the Victims of War and Tyranny in Berlin on Sunday to lay floral wreaths.

Steinmeier and Kramp-Karrenbauer knelt in front of the wreaths at the feet of Kathe Kollwitz’s sculpture ‘Mother with her dead son,’ and held a minute’s silence.

Only the Chancellor’s wreath is carried by uniformed soldiers of the Bundeswehr.

The German National Day of Mourning, which began in 1919, occurs annually, two Sundays before the start of advent. The day was established to commemorate the victims of the First World War. The official text was changed this year to included victims of political, anti-Semitic, Islamic and racist attacks that have increased in frequency over the past few years.
