Germany: Healthcare workers protest for better working conditions in Berlin

Dozens of healthcare workers and nurses took to the streets in Berlin on Wednesday as they joined a ‘Walk of care’ march.
The demonstrators could be seen marching, carrying banners, with some pushing hospital stretchers and dancing to the sound of music.
Among the speakers at the rally, a nurse expressed her hope that the new government will listen to their demands and that a change in the system financing would be likely.
The move was the first demonstration following the Federal elections, with nurses demanding better working conditions and a fair healthcare system for both patients and workers.

SOT, Shereen, Nurse: “I think the most important thing is that we say it’s impossible to do good healthcare when profits are like the main priority in our healthcare system. We finally need to go back to having our patients’ health and needs as the main focus. So we need like a change of our financing system in the healthcare system, so we can actually do our work, we can actually care for people properly. And then we need to finally listen to healthcare workers. So we need them to have a political say in what happens in our healthcare system, so we can actually make a long-lasting change for us.”

SOT, Shereen, Nurse: “We think that it’s something that we’ll have to fight for. No one is gonna give that to us because it’s expensive, and since it’s like a women’s job traditionally - nursing in general - it’s just something that it’s usually overlooked, it’s a huge problem. So that’s what we’re fighting for, we’re still gonna fight (for it within) the new government, and we hope that they’ll listen to our demands, that’s why we are here today.”
