Students at Heidelberg University shared their thoughts and reactions on the killing spree carried out by an 18-year-old who shot four people, killed one and then shot himself, as seen on Tuesday.
Students and locals lit candles and lay flowers near the crime scenes, the auditorium, and the Botanical Garden, where the perpetrator then shot himself.
“You are sad, and you are stunned, that this happened here. You hear about these things in other cities, but suddenly it’s at your University. This is a very strange and gloomy feeling, and I think everyone feels like this,” said Lena, a student at the University.
Since early morning, people gathered at the University, paying their respects to the deceased and injured on Monday.
Police and investigation units were seen at the crime scene, gathering evidence.
“Yesterday I was on lunch break, and when I looked at my phone, I saw the first ‘What’s app’ messages saying something horrible had happened at ‘Neuenheimer Feld’ and that we should seek protection. Fortunately, I was in my room, but of course, the news was shocking. I didn’t know what to do with this message,” explained Lea Gretter, another Heidelberg University student.
The gunman was an 18-year-old German biology student who had no previous criminal records, according to the police.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Mitja, Student at Heidelberg University (German): “I was actually at Cafe Botanik which is directly inside the botanical garden. We were there for lunch, and then we noticed police outside, and we heard a helicopter, but we didn’t think much of it because we thought if anything was happening, we would hear about it. And once we went outside, we realised there was an atmosphere of panic.’‘
SOT, Mitja, Student at Heidelberg University (German): “After the lecture, once the first shock was over, I realised what had happened much more.’‘

SOT, Derwish, Student at Heidelberg University (German): “The first thought was that this could not be true. I heard about it on social media actually, of course via our ‘What’s app’ group.’‘
SOT, Derwish, Student at Heidelberg University (German): “And this continues, and the news just got worse. And at one point, I realised that this was truly happening. And anybody could have been this female student. You can never foresee something like this, and that hurt me deeply. Yesterday really was a black-letter day.’‘
SOT, Derwish, Student at Heidelberg University (German): “It’s also about the students uniting and speaking about the events, and therefore I believe yesterday was an unbelievably sad day but also a day where the university stood together, and I believe this gave us a lot of courage for the future.’‘

SOT, Lea Gretter, Student at Heidelberg University (German): “You didn’t feel too safe at first, especially when other news arrived via what’s app which really scared me [saying] ‘some other groups of perpetrators are out there’, all these fake news and yes, it was just shocking.’‘
SOT, Peter Abelmann, Students Body representative at Heidelberg University (German): “At first I didn’t want to believe it and I asked myself: ‘can this be true?’ Because it sounded so absurd. It sounded so absurd that someone was shooting and then nothing, nothing else happened. ‘What actually happened?’ And of course, then I thought, where is this happening, is it close by? Is he running around? Because nothing was clear. And the next moment I thought ‘Ok, what do I have to do now, what do I personally have to do?’‘
