Sassnitz residents living close to the site where the Nord Stream 2 pipeline connects with Europe’s gas distribution grid shared their anxiety on Tuesday about Germany’s decision to delay the pipeline’s opening.
All was quiet at the Lubmin Landfall Facility, where Russian gas will now no longer be arriving, after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s announcement of the pipeline’s suspension in light of Russia’s recent recognition of the sovereignty of the self-proclaimed people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk.
“I don’t agree with it at all,” said Bernd, a Greifswald local. “We, Germany, don’t have resources, and when people say ‘we’re dependent,’ we are indeed dependent,” he added.
“What shall people here live off? Do we want to buy fracking gas from the USA? America and Canada also get their gas from Russia, but no one is talking about it, but they want to turn our tap off,” he went on to say.
Another resident, Eberhard, described the indefinite delay as ‘a power game.’
“We as individuals have little influence on the further development,” stated Eberhard.

SOT Bernd, Greifswald local resident (German): “I don’t agree with it at all. First of all, investments were made in order to finish it up and finally it is something we will all use. We, Germany, don’t have resources, and when people say ‘we’re dependent,’ we are indeed dependent.”

SOT Bernd, Greifswald local resident, (German): “What shall people here live off? Do we want to buy fracking gas from the USA? America and Canada also get their gas from Russia, but no one is talking about it, but they want to turn our tap off. I honestly don’t think it’s right. And that doesn’t have anything to do with the region, that is generally my opinion, and I just think it’s sad that again it’s being played out at a political level, because, of course, you need to have some sort of leverage, but Russia has always been a reliable partner.”

SOT Bernd, Greifswald local resident, (German): “What happens now, if Nord Stream 2 doesn’t come? Already they are saying that the gas tanks are empty. But Russia delivers. They comply with their contracts. Sure, they could supply more, but then the contracts would have to be adapted accordingly. It’s like that. People are always saying that Russia is the bad guy. Wrong, wrong, I don’t see it like that. I’m sorry.”

SOT, Eberhard, Greifswald local resident (German): “I personally think it is a power game between the involved parties and personally I have the impression that we, as individuals, have little influence on the further development.”
