Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday dismissed reports Russia or the Nord Stream 2 pipeline were behind the rising gas prices in the European Union.

Chancellor Merkel stated, “The question of whether there have been orders that have been taken by Russia that have not been fulfilled, and as its stands, with the information I have received a few days ago, I cannot say for today, that is not the case.”

The German chancellor added that both energy prices and Nord Stream 2 concerns will be addressed at the upcoming European Council meeting at the end of the month.

SOT, Angela Merkel. Chancellor of Germany (German): “We will address the energy prices at the end of October with the European Council. I would suggest not looking for the simplest answers, we have to take a closer look at everything. I spoke with the Russian president Putin about the fulfillment of gas reserves in Germany and similar topics concerning the European Union and of course the gas pipeline through Ukraine. The certification process for Nord Steam 2 is still ahead of us, that means Nord Stream 2 does not have the capacity that has been approved yet. The question of whether there have been orders that have been taken by Russia that have not been fulfilled, and as its stands with the information I have received a few days ago, I cannot say for today, that is not the case. That means there are no orders that Russia has said ‘no, we will not deliver those to you and we are not running through the Ukrainian pipeline,’ rather Russia can only fulfill orders that have been contracted out and not simply so and that is why the question is rather, is enough being ordered or is the high price at the moment possible a reason not to order and all of this must be analyzed before the October council meeting in Brussels then we will come back to this topic.”
