Police officers attended a vigil on Friday for their colleagues shot dead in Kusel on 31 January, with minister president also paying tribute.
“Since Monday morning at midnight a new era has come into effect for the Rhineland-Palatinate police force, we are all shocked, deeply horrified, and struck to the core by the death of our 24-year-old colleagues Jasmin B and our 29-year-old colleague Alexander K,” said the Chief of the Western Palatinate police Michael Denne.
Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate, Malu Dreyer, condemned malicious comments on the internet following the death of the two policemen shot dead during a traffic stop a few kilometres from Kusel.
An altar with flowers and candles was set up in the Fritz-Wunderlich-Halle to allow officers attending the service to honour their colleagues.

SOT, Christian Erfort, Police officer (German): “Yes, on Monday two of our colleagues were killed. We were able to arrest the suspects. Today the memorial service for our two colleagues in the city is taking place here.”
SOT, Michael Denne, Police Chief of West Palatinate (German): “Since Monday morning at 04:20, a new era has come into effect for the Rhineland-Palatinate police force. We are all shocked, deeply horrified, and struck to the core by the death of our 24-year-old colleagues Jasmin B and our 29-year-old colleague Alexander K, affectionately known as Alex. These murders leave us stunned as Jasmin and Alex were not only colleagues for us but friends, companions, partners in the sport who lived their whole lives together. And what is very important to me is that our thoughts are with the families, the partner of Jasmin, and their friends.”
SOT, Malu Dreyer, Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate (German): “We have to immediately mourn the loss of two young people who, from what I have heard, were young people full of life. A young police commissioner trainee and a police superintendent who still had their whole lives ahead of them. The cheerful colleagues I was proud to say they were in the police force - who simply looked to the future with great optimism”
SOT, Malu Dreyer, Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate (German): “The police have acted very quickly on hate speech on the networks and are taking action against hate speech on the net with a specially designated group. We will not tolerate any of that. We are behind and in front of our police. We will not tolerate insults and threats - and we will always pursue them very clearly. We will not delete but pursue. We will punish and use all means at our disposal to bring this to the street.”
