Germany: Merkel asks Putin to 'influence regime in Minsk' - spox

German government spokesperson Steffen Seibert said that Chancellor Angela Merkel had telephoned Russian President Putin and asked him to “influence the regime in Minsk,” regarding to migrant situation at the Polish-Belarusian border.

According to Seibert, Angela Merkel was very concerned about the situation of the refugees and underlined that people could not be instrumentalised.

“What is done by the regime in Minsk is nothing else than stately human smuggling. And this is 100 percent on the coast of the people who are being tempted into the country, who are spending money on it, in the hope this is the way into the European Union,” Seibert added.

Andrea Sasse, spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, further said that planned sanctions also targeted individuals and companies working with Alexander Lukashenko, during the press conference in Berlin on Wednesday.

Tensions between the EU and Belarus have been escalating in recent months, with the EU accusing Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of deliberately sending migrants to the border in response to sanctions imposed by the EU.

Earlier Lukashenko had stated that he would weaken control over migration at the borders with Western countries.

EU ambassadors agreed on Wednesday that Belarus migrant ‘hybrid attack’ is a legal basis for a new round of sanctions for Minsk.
