German Federal Press spokesperson Steffen Seibert said that Chancellor Angela Merkel would discuss the current situation in Afghanistan and other pressing issues such as the conflict in east Ukraine and the political situation in Belarus during her visit to Moscow and Kiev, speaking at a Berlin press conference on Wednesday.
“I can assure you that they will address the biggest international questions on the table, such as Afghanistan, the conflict in east Ukraine where Russia could do more than it has done so far, and Belarus, where a dictator does horrible things to his people and where Russia has influence,” said Seibert.
Seibert also reaffirmed Germany’s position on the Navalny case, defining it as a ‘big burden’ on the country’s relations with Russia.

SOT, Steffen Seibert, German government spokesperson (German): “Yes, I presume so [that Merkel and Putin will talk about Afghanistan during their meeting].”
SOT, Steffen Seibert, German government spokesperson (German): “Yes, it is actually the anniversary of the poisoning attack on Navalny on Russian soil on August 20, 2020, with an forbidden nerve substance. Our position is clear here, we have presented it throughout months and weeks, and it has not changed, this still-unsolved case is a very big burden on relations with Russia. And our demands remain. You also know that Navalny is unfairly in prison, and there is a new accusation coming up against him, and this is a huge burden in the relations between us and Russia.”
SOT, Steffen Seibert, German government spokesperson (German): “I don’t want to bring up topics yet. But I can assure you that they will address the biggest international questions on the table, such as Afghanistan, the conflict in east Ukraine where Russia could do more than it has done so far, and Belarus, where a dictator does horrible things to his people and where Russia has influence.”
SOT, Steffen Seibert, German government spokesperson (German): “For us, it is key that Ukraine remains as a transit land for Russian gas, also with Nord Stream 2. We take Ukraine’s concerns very seriously, and we are going to be there to support Ukraine as a transit land for gas. These were the words of the chancellor, and we are going to push for the contract that ends in 2024 to be extended.”
