SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): “About the relief units, I can only say that the federal government will keep them as long as it’s necessary. And what I have seen today is that there also are, as before, many volunteers. Should that not be the case anymore, we would do a new call. I think there’s not a lack of preparedness to help in Germany. I have the impression that in such a situation our country stands wonderfully united, not only the politicians but also the people.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): “On one hand I was relieved to see that there is a recognisable difference to the images that we saw seven weeks ago. On the other hand, I was shown again today what is still ahead of us, and when it’s almost all cleared and the streets look normal again, and you look into these empty houses, that will have to be at least renovated or even demolished. And we are in the beginning of September, then I have a big respect, so to say, acknowledging what still lies ahead of us. And we are not even close to the point in which I can go back home and say, well, a lot was already achieved, that I can say, but now we can’t leave things to themselves, we are far from that, we need a really long, long breath.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany (German): “A thought that I found interesting today is that we can learn something at the European level. There were affected people also in the Netherlands, in Belgium, we had a similar event in France. And independently of what we are doing here under high pressure, I would take this to the European level, to address and think of the adaptation to climate change. We need not only to combat it, with a neutral economy and life, but in the meantime we also need to gather the best ideas in Europe, the best experts, to learn and to show how we can do it better. That’s a very interesting thought that I heard.”
