A range of German politicians decried the ongoing existence of the Guantanamo Bay at the Reichstag building in Berlin, Thursday, the first time the US prison camp has ever been debated in German parliament.
Die Linke politician Zaklin Nastic hit out at what he called “the double standards” of politicians focusing on alleged human rights abuses by non-Western governments, but “simultaneously allowing NATO crimes or weapons exports.” Derya Turk-Nachbaur from the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) added that nobody should be seen as “just a number or a mere object” but ”this is what happens in Guantanamo, this is why we will continue to work to close this camp.”
On the 20th anniversary of the prison camp’s creation, left-wing party Die Linke (The Left) brought the motion demanding the immediate closure of the facility to the Bundestag, and it was later referred to the parliament’s Human Rights Committee. US President Joe Biden has committed to closing the prison facility but is yet to release the 39 prisoners that remain at the US camp.
The motion failed to go to an immediate vote after the debate as Linke intended.

SOT Zaklin Nastic, Die Linke (German): “You speak about violations of human rights in Russia, China or Venezuela with a loud voice, especially by the governments, but simultaneously you allow NATO crimes or weapons exports. We call that double standards and these are the worst.”

SOT Derya Turk-Nachbaur, Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) (German): “Human dignity means that not a single person is just a number or a mere object. Therefore, never again under any circumstances can this happen. But this is what happens in Guantanamo. This is why we will continue to work to close this camp together with all parties committed to democracy.”

SOT Jurgen Trittin, Alliance 90/The Greens (German): “Twenty years of Guantanamo are twenty years of shame. Today, many autocrats denounce universal human rights as a Western value it is because of the War on Terror.”
