Germany: Muslim community helps Hagen-Hohenlimburg flood victims with clean-up operations

Volunteers from the Ahmadiyya Muslim community assisted Hagen-Hohenlimburg locals affected by the recent floods with their clean-up operations, on Sunday.

Volunteers were seen clearing roads and carrying damaged furniture out of flooded houses.

One of the volunteers, Saud Ahmed, explained that they have been on-site for the last three to four days.

“Today we have also been to some places and met the residents there and even found out that we were the first to come to help them at all. And, as I said, they were very pleased that there are still people in the area who want to help and who have a migration background. They mentioned that very clearly and made it clear that they were very pleased by that,” he said.

Over 180 people died in the flooding in western Germany and Belgium, while thousands more remain missing. At least 143 died in Germany, where the floods are the country’s worst natural disaster in over half a century.

SOT, Yvonne Nowosatko, Local resident whose house was damaged by flood (German): “As we woke up at 2 am the yard was already half under water and then my daughter said give me the car key, I’ll bring the car down from the yard quickly and by the time my husband put on his pants, it was already all flooded.”

SOT, Yvonne Nowosatko, Local resident whose house was damaged by flood (German): “My daughter saved the car very quickly, by taking it above, to the main street. But she almost didn’t manage to get back. If the neighbour hadn’t brought her back, she wouldn’t have got through there on her own.”

SOT, Yvonne Nowosatko, Local resident whose house was damaged by flood (German): “So, you weren’t aware of the danger, she is only 1.50 m tall and of course, she wanted to save her car and we were just not aware of the danger at that moment, that is unbelievable.”

SOT, Barbel Seeler, Yvonne’s mother (German): “We are glad that the helpers were here today, that they helped us, that we at least got a room empty.”

SOT, Mr Hofinghoff, Local farmer (German): “To this day I had a relatively one-sided opinion about the refugees, until I was allowed to experience our German fellow citizens with disaster tourism, like here for example. (Yelling at motorcyclist) Yes, those who just drive past me, who film me when I work, as if I were a monkey in the zoo. I have to say that I have a completely new image of Germany. A completely new picture and I am extremely disappointed that the police only support us to a limited extent. The clerks are there to keep things tidy and to keep people away from these places and bring those who want to help and not the other way around.”

SOT, Saud Ahmed, Ahmadiyya volunteer (German): “And we are the youngsters of the Ahmadiyya youth and, in our cooperation with Humanity First, we have been here for the last three to four days. Today we expected around 40 to 50 young people here and we have exceeded the number by far. There were over 60 people here today, young people and also Humanity First members. We have provided our support and service to the people affected in the places here, in the area here in Hagen-Hohenlimburg, the places that are very badly affected.”

SOT, Saud Ahmed, Ahmadiyya volunteer (German): “The residents are very, very pleased, and we have heard from some of them today that, they are delighted to find the young Muslims here to land them a hand, unlike some others, that are here just holding the camera.”
