German MPs debated the concerning situation at the Polish-Belarusian border at Thursday’s session in Berlin.

AfD introduced two motions, which were aimed at ‘preventing mass migration via Poland with border police measures in time and secure sustainable defence measures’ as well as ‘closing of the Belarusian route effectively.’

“We cannot let this happen. 2015 cannot be repeated,” Martin Hess, a member of the AfD said, referring to the 2015 migrant crisis when Germany took over one million refugees and migrants in.

“We cannot be extorted because this is about a humanitarian drama but it is also about an attempt of political extortion by the Belarusian dictator. We cannot concede to this extortion otherwise dictators will decide who, when and how many people are allowed to travel to the EU,” Mathias Middelberg, an MP for CDU / CSU party urged in his speech.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Aydan Ozuguz, Bundestag Vice President (German): “Debate on the motions by the fraction of AfD with the headlines ‘Preventing mass migration via Poland with border police measures in time and secure sustainable defence measures’ as well as ‘Closing of the Belarusian route effectively.’”

SOT, Martin Hess, MP for AfD (German): “Those criticising Poland now or like Wolfgang Schauble wanting to bring violent migrants inside the EU ignore vital security interests of the German population and send a fatal signal to every despot, that the mass migration weapon is successful. We cannot let this happen. 2015 cannot be repeated.”

SOT, Martin Hess, MP for AfD (German): “That is why we have to support Poland with all political and logistical matters for the defence of Europe. We have to send a clear signal to the migrants that we don’t accomodate violent border crossers and we have to start refusing illegal migrants at our borders.”

SOT, Ulrich Groetsch, MP for SPD (German): “To call the deliberate creation of an emergency situation for human beings as a mass migration and a danger for Europe, therefore to do politics based on human suffering, to feign wrong facts to human beings for gaining political profit for oneself, to scare the people in Germany and Europe, to provoke alleged crises or to gain profit from crises when help, humanity and order should be the order of the day - this is the policy of Mr Lukashenko and it is also your policies. These are the policies of the AfD on all levels.”

SOT, Mathias Middelberg, MP for CDU/CSU (German): “In this situation, one thing must be clear - we cannot be blackmailed because this is about a humanitarian drama but it is also about an attempt of political blackmailing by the Belarusian dictator. We cannot concede to this extortion otherwise dictators will decide who, when and how many people are allowed to travel to the EU.”

SOT, Omid Nouripour, MP for Green Party (German): “That is why it is necessary to clearly show, that we stand with our colleagues, our partner countries in Poland, Latvia and Lithuania, that we will help them, that we stand in solidarity but of course that we also demand to follow law and order to allow NGOs where help is necessary, to let journalists do their work - this is the European Union, that is the community of values that we all stand for together if we are democrats.”

SOT, Zaklin Nastic, MP for Left Party (German): “This ‘no-go-area’ which was created has to go immediately. There is no law at this border, it is a lawless zone.”

SOT, Zaklin Nastic, MP for Left Party (German): “Illegal pushbacks have to be stopped immediately, the Geneva refugee conventions has to be respected.”

SOT, Zaklin Nastic, MP for Left Party (German): “Reasons for fleeing are also NATO wars and German arms exports. That is why you need to finally end the arms exports to the Saudi-Arabian criminal coalition that bombs Yemen. Stop Erdogan and his criminal war against the Kurds in Syria. Reasons for fleeing need to be fought, not refugees.”
