Police officers checked motorists at the Polish-German border crossing around Gubin on Sunday, amid fears of illegal border crossing attempts.

An increased police presence was seen at the border, while tensions at the Polish-Belarusian border threatened to escalate. Police officers secured the bridge over the Neisse River and forest paths in the surrounding area.

On Saturday, there were 223 attempts to cross the border, according to Poland.

Tensions between the EU and Belarus have escalated in recent months. The EU accuses Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of deliberately sending migrants to the border in response to sanctions imposed by the EU.

Earlier, Lukashenko had said he would weaken control over migration at the borders with Western countries.

EU ambassadors agreed on Wednesday that the “hybrid attack” of Belarusian migrants provides a legal basis for a new round of sanctions against Minsk.
