The police of Northern Upper Bavaria raided and seized the assets of a high-end car garage in Ingolstadt thought to have some Italian mafia links on Wednesday.
Police, investigators and special units were present to arrest 11 people allegedly linked with sales tax fraud amounting to millions and involvement in the formation of a criminal organisation.
“We are currently investigating a major case of sales tax fraud. The newly created European Prosecutor’s Office has been relevant here, having issued 11 arrest warrants and 46 search warrants, that all have been executed,” said the spokesperson of the Northern Upper Bavaria Police Department, Andreas Aichel.
“All this happened in three countries, namely in Germany, Italy, and Bulgaria,” added Aichele.
According to Aichel, some of the arrested may be part of the ‘Ndrangheta’ criminal organisation, one of the largest and most powerful mafia groups in Italy.
The accused are set to be brought before a judge between Wednesday and Thursday for a decision on pre-trial detention.

SOT, Andreas Aichele, Spokesperson Northern Upper Bavaria Police Department (German): “We are currently investigating a major case of sales tax fraud. The newly created European Prosecutor’s Office has been relevant here, having issued 11 arrest warrants and 46 search warrants, that all have been executed. All this happened in three countries, namely in Germany, Italy, and Bulgaria.”

SOT, Andreas Aichele, Spokesperson at Northern Upper Bavaria Police Department (German): “Well, it is so that some of the suspects we could arrest today are associated to the Italian mafia organisation ‘Ndrangheta’. That alone brings some controversy to the topic. Hence, along with the many police officials and tax investigators that were on the scene, there were also colleagues of from the Spezialeinsatzkommando (Police tactical unit) in operation, which were present at least at the beginning of the raid and assured the safety in this situation”

SOT, Andreas Aichele, Spokesperson at Northern Upper Bavaria Police Department (German): “We are currently in the county of Eichstatt at a company, where we could find and seize some very high-value vehicles. And we assume that these vehicles were part of the whole fraud system. They were sold all over Europe and then they asked for the reimbursement of the sales tax, even though that tax was never paid.”

SOT, Andreas Aichele, Spokesperson at Northern Upper Bavaria Police Department (German): “We are investigating on behalf of the European Prosecutor’s Office based on the accusation of the formation of a criminal organisation. This is indeed a very serious criminal accusation, but also on heavy tax evasion. All 11 people will be brought to a judge between today and tomorrow. And he will decide on the pre-trial detention.”
