Germany: Protest outside Gorillas HQ slams major layoffs

Former and current workers of the grocery delivery startup Gorillas protested in front of the startup headquarters in Berlin on Wednesday.

The protest came after a large number of the delivery personnel were fired after months of strikes against the company’s working conditions.

Workers described tactics such as random phone calls from unknown numbers asking if workers had participated in strikes immediately followed up with a termination of their work.

Strike leaders handed in letters to management demanding the colleagues who had been unlawfully fired to be reinstated.

SOT, Dugyo, Recently fired worker: “I was a worker at Gorillas until yesterday morning, and I was fired because I was striking for better working conditions and safety at the work place.”

SOT, Dugyo, Recently fired worker: “We don’t have an exact number of people who got fired because everything about this company is just un-transparent. We got calls from private numbers. We didn’t get any names of these people they just said they were from Gorillas and they just asked questions, ‘did you support the strike or did you participate in the strike,’ and if the answer was yes then they were just fired automatically on the phone or they were fired in warehouses when they were showing up.”

SOT, Dugyo, Recently fired worker: “They did not state any reason for firing me, but it’s obvious, I got fired because I was participating very actively in the strike because we were doing what we believed that was correct and that was necessary and that was right for any basic workers rights and for any worker in any warehouse. We were striking for payment in full and on time, we were striking for safety in the workplace, we were striking for better working equipment that would not hurt us when we are using them like broken bikes. We cannot trust those bikes and take any orders and go because the saddles get broken and imagine you are riding it and the saddle you are sitting on breaks in the middle of traffic? What’s going to happen you cannot continue.”

SOT, Jascha, Striker: “We would like to submit these letters contesting these terminations to the management right now, because the terminations are invalid as they are and the management will have to terminate the colleagues properly. In the meantime, the colleagues will not be terminated. This only concerns that have not received their terminations letters. A lot of the colleagues were fired by phone and told they participated in a legal strike and that is why they were fire, but there has so far been no official termination by letter. We will be asking management to come out right now to hand them in these letters and to get these colleagues reinstated for the time being.”
