Protesters gathered outside the regional court on the first day of the “NSU 2.0” trial in Frankfurt, on Wednesday.

The trial is against the 54-year-old, known as Alexander M., is accused of sending hundreds of threatening and racist letters towards lawyer Seda Basay-Yildiz and other public figures.

The letters contained information that is not publicly available such as the victims’ private addresses, something that has puzzled the authorities.

The alleged perpetrator signed the letters with the pseudonym “NSU 2.0” referring to the neo-nazi terrorist organisation (National Socialist Underground) that killed at least 10 people between 1999 and 2007.
