With the reading of the indictment, the trial against a Syrian doctor for crimes against humanity began on Wednesday before the Higher Regional Court (OLG) in Frankfurt am Main.

The indictment contained the charges of murder, 18 cases of torture, serious and dangerous bodily harm, severe deprivation of liberty and deprivation of liberty resulting in death.

The prosecution around senior public prosecutor Anna Zabeck accuses the 36-year-old of torturing and causing serious physical and mental damage to prisoners in 2011 and 2012 as an assistant doctor in an army hospital and a military intelligence prison in Homs, Syria.

The victims were attributed as being opposers of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Last week, the world’s first state torture trial against a former employee of a Syrian secret service ended before the Koblenz Higher Regional Court, during which defendant Anwar R was sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity.
