Germany: Fmr Syrian intelligence officer handed life sentence in landmark torture trial

A former Syrian intelligence officer Anwar R was handed a life sentence in a landmark torture trial, in Germany’s Koblenz on Thursday.
Anwar R was accused of involvement in at least 30 deaths while allegedly working for the Syrian intelligence service. The trial was part of the world-first processing of allegations of crimes against humanity committed by the apparatus of the Syrian state.
The prosecution alleged that Anwar R, a former colonel at Branch 251 detention centre near Damascus, was in charge of a unit that carried out over 4,000 cases of torture.
The defendant was convicted of rape, sexual abuse and supervising interrogations which included electric shocks and beatings. He had denied all charges.
Anwar R has one week to appeal the verdict.
