The landmark trial against Anwar R., a suspected member of the Syrian intelligence service accused to be involved in at least 30 deaths during the civil war, entered its final stages in Koblenz on Thursday.
The prosecution has accused Anwar R of crimes against humanity in the years 2011 and 2012 when he allegedly worked as the lead interrogator at a detention centre in Damascus and commanded over 4,000 cases of torture. Prosecutors seek a life sentence for the defendant.
The trial is the first to connect Bashar al-Assad’s government with crimes against humanity and a verdict is expected to be reached by January 13, 2022.
