Dozens gathered near Brandenburg Gate in Berlin on Friday to express solidarity with anti-government protesters in Kazakhstan as tensions tighten in the country.

Demonstrators waved Kazakh flags and chanted ‘Freedom for Kazakhstan’ and ‘Old man, go away,’ a popular slogan against former President of 30 years Nursultan Nazarbayev. Apples were displayed on the ground to symbolise the Kazakh capital of Almaty.

Participants also criticised President Zhomart Tokayev’s appeal for military support from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) on signs and in speeches.

“It’s very important to us to show solidarity because we can’t be quiet; we can’t watch those terrifying shots showing what’s happening to peaceful residents, to peaceful protesters,” said Protester Dina Nurpeisova.

“Our hearts are torn for our nears and dears, we can’t reach them since the internet and mobile networks are cut off,” she added.

On Thursday, the Collective Security Council sent peacekeeping forces to Kazakhstan to protect state and military facilities and assist law enforcement.

As reported by the republic’s Ministry of Health, more than 1,000 people have been injured during the ongoing protests in the country and almost 400 hospitalised.

SOT, Dina Nurpeisova, Demonstrator (Russian): “It’s very important to us to show solidarity because we can’t be quiet, we can’t watch those terrifying shots showing what’s happening to peaceful residents, to peaceful protesters, and our hearts are torn for our nears and dears, we can’t reach them since the internet and mobile networks are cut off.”

SOT, Dina Nurpeisova, Demonstrator (Russian): “Yes, I think that Tokaev made a terrifying mistake, he shot himself in the foot, the people have taken this really badly, and I think that in my eyes he turned out to be a betrayer. It’s just disgusting.”

SOT, Dina Nurpeisova, demonstrator (Russian): “Apples are the symbol of our beloved city of Almaty. Almaty translates as a father of apples. Our city is on fire now and it’s very dangerous there, and thus we wanted to symbolically show our solidarity with the city here on Paris Square in Berlin, so we put this symbol.”
