German Chancellor Olaf Scholz warned Russia to not underestimate Germany’s ‘unity and resolve’ at a joint press conference with the leaders of the Baltic States for talks on Ukraine, Thursday, in Berlin.
“In this critical situation for all of us, Russia should not underestimate our unity and resolve as a partner in the EU and as an ally in NATO,” he said at the presser with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins.
Scholz underlined that both the European Union and NATO are ‘united and determined’ on the matter and emphasised the importance of the de-escalation of the situation.
“At the moment it is about nothing less than preventing war in Europe. We want to maintain peace and stability on our continent. This unites us,” he added.
In the talks with his counterparts, the Chancellor assured the Baltic NATO partners of Germany’s assistance as they were ‘directly affected by the worrying military activities that Russia is unfolding both on the Ukrainian border and in Belarus’.
“More than 500 soldiers support their Lithuanian comrades. At the request of our partners in Lithuania, we have just decided to significantly increase this contingent. We stand by your side. That’s very important to me,” he said.
Chancellor Scholz will travel to Kyiv and Moscow next week to talk to both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
