The members of the newly elected Bundestag (German parliament) have voted for Barbel Bas (SPD) to be the new head of the parliament in its first constituent session on Tuesday in Berlin.
The 53-year-old received 576 of 724 votes in the election and accepted the election ‘with all her heart’.
In her speech, Bas pointed out that it is ‘not glorious’ that she is only the third woman in the history of the German parliament to hold this position and announced it as her ‘special task to distribute responsibilities fairly.
The diversity and youth of the 20th Bundestag, on the other hand, is good for society, emphasised as, who promised to be a President for all members of the parliament.
The SPD politician condemned hatred and political agitation and advocated for closer proximity to the citizenry and a more understandable policy, which would be important to reach the middle of society.
“Let us address many people, approach the citizens of our country, above all those who have not felt addressed by politics for a long time. People who have become alienated to politics,” she said, addressing the members of parliament.
Bas is taking the post from CDU politician Wolfgang Schauble who has been leading the parliament since 2017.
