Germany: Stoltenberg calls on Germany to "remain committed" to NATO's nuclear sharing arrangements

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on Germany to ‘remain committed’ to NATO’s nuclear sharing arrangements, in remarks made at a media event in Berlin on Friday.

“Hybrid attacks as we see from Belarus on the border with Poland, we also face persistent terrorist threats, the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the security implications of climate change,” he said.

Stoltenberg called for “new capabilities, not new structures,” and said that he counted on Germany to continue to invest in defence. “And I count on Germany to remain committed to NATO’s nuclear sharing. It is our ultimate security guarantee, our aim is world free of nuclear weapons but as long as others have them, NATO must have them too,” he said.

Germany is due to get a new coalition government in the coming days and weeks as talks between the prospective ruling parties wrap up.
