German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said the Taliban had set up checkpoints and were only allowing foreign nationals into Kabul’s airport, speaking at a press conference in Berlin on Tuesday.
According to the Foreign Minister, a total of about 180 people were waiting at Kabul airport for the next evacuation. Maas also confirmed the evacuation of 125 people from the Taliban-occupied country has been successful and more flights were pending.
German military personnel on the ground erected a secure gate to the airport to ease the evacuation.

SOT, Heiko Maas, German foreign minister (German): “A second evacuation flight left Kabul an hour ago and carried 125 German citizens, Afghans and citizens of other countries to safety. Another 100 Germans are already in the military part of the airport. The air bridge first goes to Tashkent in Uzbekistan and the next step then, will be special flights of Lufthansa to Germany.” *NO CUTAWAY AT SOURCE*
SOT, Heiko Maas, German foreign minister (German): “In the last days we currently have a situation in the city where the Taliban have set up checkpoints everywhere and are only allowing people through the entire area around the airport if they are foreign nationals, but not Afghans who worked for the coalition forces or Afghan nationals. That is why we told the German citizens to go to the airport.” *NO CUTAWAY AT SOURCE*
SOT, Heiko Maas, German foreign minister (German): “The situation at the airport has stabilised, the Bundeswehr (German Army) secures the access there, and we are working hard so that more people can be taken into safety today.” *NO CUTAWAY AT SOURCE*
SOT, Heiko Maas, German foreign minister (German): “We will watch the developments very closely and those, who are now executing power in Afghanistan will be judged by their actions. As European Union, we will especially focus our view on the stability of the region. The neighbouring countries will certainly be confronted with further refugee movements. We have already told the United Nations that we are ready to help with the humanitarian care of these people in neighbouring countries - however, eventually we will need to have a common European approach for that, and that will be discussed at the foreign ministers’ meeting.” *NO CUTAWAY AT SOURCE*
SOT, Heiko Maas, German foreign minister (German): “We will report on the composition of the groups of people later today. They are German citizens, they are Afghans and they are also nationals of other countries. We will certainly have a similar composition on the flights that will take place today and hopefully also in the coming days. Of course, we depend on who comes into the area of the airport and when. In any case, together with the Bundeswehr soldiers on the ground and the United States, we have organised a lock, a gate in the airport where the people concerned can enter.”
