Germany: Thousands of Afghan evacuees go through processing at US military base in Kaiserslautern

Around 3,000 Afghan evacuees were being processed at a US military base in Kaiserslautern on Monday, after being transported out of their home country in the wake of the Taliban’s seizure of power.

“We currently have on ground just over 3,000 travellers moving through, the number changes and fluctuates almost by the minute, as new flights arrive or as new flights depart,” said Captain Alex Lovely of 21st Theater Sustainment Command.

“We’ve seen people depart our site as quickly as six hours after arrival, and at other times we’ve seen it took closer to five days or so,” added Lovely, explaining the deciding factor was how many flights were available.

Over 122,000 people have been evacuated by the US and its allies, according to the White House, since the start of the airlift. The evacuation efforts are set to end on Tuesday, US President Joe Biden’s August 31 deadline for the withdrawal of the US military.

SOT, Army major and doctor: “If anybody comes in with any COVID-like symptoms, were tracking vital signs and if there any kind of abnormal vital signs we send them off to LARMC (Landstuhl Regional Medical Centre) so we’ve seen a couple of kids and a couple of adults with problems breathing, and because I don’t have X-ray here, I don’t have lab here were sending them up and out, so far we haven’t gotten anybody back, its just plain old viruses.”
