LIVE: Biden delivers remarks on evacuations from Afghanistan

US President Joe Biden is delivering remarks on the evacuation of American citizens, special immigrant visa applicants and vulnerable Afghans from Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover on Friday, August 20 in Washington DC. Vice President Kamala Harris is also expected to attend.

Biden has previously said that he intended to evacuate all US forces out of Afghanistan by the end of August, but thousands of US citizens are still stranded in the country. The administration has pledged to evacuate all remaining US citizens, along with approximately 65,000 Afghans who were in service for the US government, such as translators for the military. More the 5,000 US troops are on the ground helping with the operations at the Kabul airport.

Taliban forces took control over the Afghan capital Kabul on Sunday, with the country’s President Ashraf Ghani having fled to the United Arab Emirates.
