LIVE: Biden holds press conference amid Taliban takeover of Afghanistan

US President Joe Biden is holding a press conference on Monday, August 16 in Washington DC.

The press conference takes place following the takeover of Afghanistan by Taliban fighters as they entered Kabul on Sunday. President Ashraf Ghani has also fled the country and the US has evacuated all personnel from its embassy.

In the previous days, the Taliban gained control of two of Afghanistan’s biggest cities, Kandahar and Herat. Mazar-i-Sharif, one of Afghanistan’s economic hubs and the fourth biggest city, fell to the insurgents on Saturday.

The recent Taliban offensive follows the US and other NATO forces’ ongoing withdrawal from the country.
