German Chancellor Angela Merkel is holding a press conference in Berlin on Monday, August 16, on the current situation in Afghanistan.

Merkel is expected to comment on the need to rescue over 10,000 people from the country following the Taliban takeover

They include German nationals, Afghan support staff as well as human rights activists, lawyers and others who could be at risk.

The recent Taliban offensive follows the US and other NATO forces’ ongoing withdrawal from the country.
