Germany: Thousands of public service workers march for better pay and working conditions

More than 4000 public service workers marched in Dusseldorf on Thursday, demanding a five percent pay rise and better working conditions.

The regional demonstration took place ahead of the third round of negotiations between trade unions and the German state employers’ umbrella organisation, which will be held on November 27-28 in Potsdam.

Participants of the rally walked from the headquarters of the German Trade Union Confederation, an umbrella organisation for 8 German trade unions, towards the state parliament compound, where the final event took place.

During the past few weeks numerous strikes and demonstrations of public sector employees have been held across Germany. Trade unions are calling for a salary increase of five percent for public service employees, as well as a 300 euro per month (336 USD per month) wage increase for healthcare workers due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

SOT, Christoph Alt, Spokesperson of the Education and Science Workers Union (German): “We are here today for a statewide strike in North Rhein Westphalia because the employers, even after the second round of negotiations, have not mustered up an offer yet. We will not let them continue like this. We want appreciation and acknowledgement for our work during the pandemic, that means we want a pay raise of 5 percent, at least 150 euro more, that is why we are here today. Our strikes in the past weeks have accomplished a lot and because we are ready to strike and fight, the employers should listen up. It is irresponsible that we are here, forced to strike, and the employers are not budging. We will not let that continue.”

SOT, Feyza Nas, Uniklinik Dusseldorf employee and Ver.di Jugend Representative (German): “We are all here together today, GEW NRW, ver.di youth group and also ver.di. The police are also here and we are here to show that we deserve more than we have received. This weekend, the third round of negotiations will begin in Potsdam, and we will negotiate a deal. If nothing comes of it we will of course continue and go into an open-ended strike. The one thing I can say is that we will be as loud as we can until we get what we deserve and I think it is justified. That we have worked so much during this pandemic without being thanked or compensated for that is absolutely shameful and outrageous.”
