Germany: Trial against suspected Berlin cannibal begins

The trial against a man suspected of killing another man and eating parts of his body began in Berlin on Tuesday.

The defendant Stefan R. was seen in the courtroom hiding his face from the press while the victim’s family and lawyers were also present at the trial.

Stefan R. has been accused of killing his 44 year-old victim, dismembering him, and eating parts of him in September 2020, after the pair met on an online dating platform.

“The suspect was active on various so called cannibalistic forums for several months and was researching meticulously how to slaughter people and eat them and was also researching how to hide the evidence. Further investigation did in fact confirm this,” explained a prosecutor outside the court room.

Several parts of the victim’s body were found buried around Berlin, with only one still missing reportedly the victim’s penis.

SOT, Lisa Jani, Spokesperson (German): “The first day of the trial ended quickly. There were a few formalities where the accusation was read which was very short and only one sentence long. The suspect was able to address the accusations. He expressed through his lawyer that he did not want to address the accusations at this moment. Then the defendant’s lawyer requested a break in the hearing because certain volumes of the files were not available for them. The court would now like to examine this and has cancelled the continuation date originally scheduled for Thursday and have rescheduled for next Tuesday”

SOT, Sven Peitzner, Victim’s family lawyer (German): “The parents want to be a co-plaintiff part in this trial in order to play an active role and do not wish to be only witnesses or spectators”
