German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier recognised the various contributions of Desmond Tutu following his death, a government spokesperson confirmed during a press conference in Berlin on Monday.

“In his message of condolence, Olaf Scholz, like Federal President Steinmeier, emphasized Desmond Tutu’s decisive contribution to overcoming apartheid in South Africa and emphasised that Desmond Tutu used all his life to fight for humanity, freedom and equality,” said Deputy Spokesperson of the Federal Government, Wolfgang Buchner.

The late human rights activist died in Cape Town, South Africa on Sunday at the age of 90 from cancer.

The spokesperson also touched on the upcoming Russian NATO Council stating that the “important part is that talks are happening on many different levels.”

“The federal government would like to see a revival of the Normandy format with Russian participation. The federal government would be confident to resolve all issues within the framework of this format and also to come to full implementation of this Minsk Agreement,” Buchner explained.

The meeting which is planned to take place on January 12 comes on the back of weeks of border tensions between Ukraine and Russia and amid a call made by NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg to continue NATO membership expansion, noting that Ukraine will be supported in becoming a member.
