The Wahl-O-Mat, a physical voter compatibility calculator, has been placed on display in Hamburg on Friday, with the intention to educate voters and promote debate ahead of the 2021 Federal elections.
The Federal Agency for Civic Education is responsible for the initiative, which first unveiled the experience in 2002 and claims on its website that the calculator has been used over 85 million times. An app version of the calculator is also available.

According to Hamburg’s head of the Federal Agency for Civic Education, the physical version is important for creating the opportunity for people to discuss the political topics with each other, while also informing themselves and understanding their point of view.

This physical version is already deployed across many schools to draw out political discussion among young people.

The presentation of the calculator was attended by Hamburg political candidates including Aydan Ozoguz (SPD), Marcus Weinberg (CDU), Katharina Beck (die GRUNEN), Johan Grasshof (die LINKE), Michael Kruse (FDP) and Nicole Jordan (AfD).

For the 2021 Federal elections, 7 state centres for political education will be offering the physical form of the Wahl-O-Mat for members of the public to try out.
