Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet said he was dissatisfied with the first results of the exit polls on Sunday evening as he spoke at his party’s election night event.
“We cannot be happy with the result,” he said.
He thanked the outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel for her nearly 16 years of work and renewed his promise to CDU voters not to join a left-lead coalition.
“We as the Union have received a clear mandate from our voters: a vote for the Union is a vote against a government lead by the left,” he said.
“We need a coalition that will make our country faster, that will digitise it, that will free our country from shackles and allow more speed for planning and approval procedures. We need a coalition that stands for cosmopolitanism and free-market solutions,” Laschet added.
In the current projections by the ARD, the Union is at 24.5 percent behind the Social Democratic Party (SPD), 25.5 percent, and ahead of the Green Party 13.8 percent.
SOT, Armin Laschet, Christian Democratic Union (CDU) chancellor candidate (German): “Today is a very special election night. For the first time in 16 years, Angela Merkel has not run for Chancellor. Those were 16 good years for Germany, and that’s why I thank Angela Merkel for her work.” *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*
SOT, Armin Laschet, Christian Democratic Union (CDU) chancellor candidate (German): “This election evening is an exceptional situation. At the moment we have no secured final results, no secured figures. But we can already say: We cannot be happy with the result. And yet, the outcome of the election is still completely unclear, it will be a long evening.”
SOT, Armin Laschet, Christian Democratic Union (CDU) chancellor candidate (German): “This poses a major challenge for the Union (Christian Democratic Union) and all democratic parties. We have to set the course for the 20s, no party can do that alone. And that is why a great effort is now required from all the great democrats, we have to overcome contradictions and hold Germany together. For the first time, there will be a federal government with three alliance partners. And we as the Union have received a clear mandate from our voters: a vote for the Union is a vote against a government lead by the left.” *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*
SOT, Armin Laschet, Christian Democratic Union (CDU) chancellor candidate (German): “Germany is building a coalition for more sustainability in every respect: in terms of climate protection and finances. We are responsible for future generations, for our children and our grandchildren. And we have to live up to this responsibility more than before, especially when it comes to climate protection. We need a coalition that will make our country faster, that will digitize it, that will free our country from shackles and allow more speed for planning and approval procedures. We need a coalition that stands for cosmopolitanism and free-market solutions. A coalition that strengthens Europe and that, together with the like-minded democracies of the world, shapes the challenges of the future, a coalition that makes a contribution to a better world.” *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*
SOT, Armin Laschet, Christian Democratic Union (CDU) chancellor candidate (German): “The election campaign is over, now it’s one thing counts: a stable coalition for a strong and modern Germany. And the Chancellor will be whoever succeeds in connecting opposites and developing a good joint programme for the next four years.”
