The towering concrete stacks at this power plant in Arizona came crashing down on Friday.

The 236m structures loomed over one of the largest coal-fired sites in the American West.

The Navajo Generating Station closed last year as natural gas became a cheaper alternative for meeting the area’s energy needs.

Environmentalists called for its closure because of its reliance on fossil fuels and large quantities of water. The plant has burned around 24,000 tons of coal a day for nearly 50 years.
