Gourd vibes: Annual South Jersey Pumpkin Show held in Woodstown

Local residents flocked to visit the annual South Jersey Pumpkin festival, as seen on Saturday in Woodstown, New Jersey.
Attendees could be seen wearing pumpkin-orange attire and taking pictures with various autumn-themed sculptures, with an impressive pumpkin pyramid standing at the centre of the venue.
“In 2003 [with] my son Scott Bailey, who tragically lost his life on an ATV in 2010, we started this pumpkin show,” said organiser Kathryn Wright.
Wright explained that the Circleville Pumpkin Show in her native Columbus was the inspiration behind her event, stating, “[I] wanted to bring Ohio’s pumpkin show to the East Coast.”
The show was also attended by award-winning chainsaw artist Joe Wenal, who gave demonstrations to the guests, as well as carving custom sculptures.
This year marked the festival’s 18th year, after it was postponed in 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

I’m from Columbus, Ohio, grew up at the Circleville Pumpkin Show, I moved out here to New Jersey and wanted to bring Ohio’s pumpkin show to the East Coast.”

SOT, Kathryn Wright, South Jersey Pumpkin Show organiser: “We bring small businesses and consumers together at family-friendly festivals, and everything about this festival is designed for mum, dad, the kids, even the pets, we’re a pet-friendly festival.”

SOT, Kathryn Wright, South Jersey Pumpkin Show organiser: “The pumpkin pyramid is kind of copied from the Circleville Pumpkin Show, they have a pumpkin pyramid so I wanted to do the same. A young man by the name of Gilbert Henson Junior built that outside of his garage, 23 years old, he built the pyramid. And every Sunday of the festival, a non-profit organisation gets to sell everything on that pyramid and it’s a fundraiser for their group. This year, it’s going to the Girl Scouts’ travelling archery team, so everything on that tower behind me will benefit the Girl Scouts.”

SOT, Joe Wenal, Chainsaw artist: “I’m a full-time, award-winning chainsaw artist. I am out here doing demonstrations for people to watch. So I’ve been a full-time carver now for about ten years.”

SOT, Joe Wenal, Chainsaw artist: “I got started, actually, through injury. I ruptured my Achilles tendons and I was sitting at home going a little stir-crazy, so I taught myself how to chainsaw-carve and ten years later here I am.”

SOT, Joe Wenal, Chainsaw artist: “I’ll normally do some, I always do bears, everybody loves bears so I’ll carve a couple of bears. I’ll probably do some owls, and considering we’re at the pumpkin festival I’ll probably carve a couple of pumpkins as well. And right now I’m working on a turtle.”
