Greece: Hundreds protest migrant pushbacks at Greek-Turkish border

Hundreds of protesters hit the streets in Athens on Sunday to protest against Greece’s alleged migrant pushbacks at the border with Turkey.
The rally was attended by migrants, members of civil society and antifascist groups, who expressed solidarity with migrants who are mistreated while trying to cross into the European Union, in particular from Turkey. The activists shouted slogans against “the assassination of migrants at the border” while holding banners reading “Stop pushbacks and border violence” among others.
Protesters carried an inflatable dinghy, used largely by migrants to cross the seas from Turkey, and marched on the Greek parliament through the streets of the capital. Police in some instances blocked the protesters’ path, redirecting them to different paths.
The protest comes days after 19 migrants have been found frozen to death near Turkey’s border with Greece. Ankara has accused Greek border guards of illegally pushing the migrants back, while Athens has rejected the claims.
