Greece: Hundreds protest worker's fatal accident at Athens port

Hundreds gathered at the Piraeus container terminal in the port of Athens on Thursday to protest a fatal accident which caused the death of a 45-year-old port worker.

The workers have been going on consecutive 24 hour strikes since the man died on this past Monday, protesting what they say are dangerous working conditions at Cosco.

“The fatal accident happened because of insufficient health and safety measures. Unlike profit, complete safety measures are not a priority for them,” said Markos Bekris, a member of a container terminal workers union.

Earlier this month, the Greek parliament approved an amended deal with the shipping group Cosco, later allowing it to raise its stake in Piraeus port from 51 percent to 67 percent.
