Riot police were deployed to the US embassy in Athens on Wednesday, as thousands marched to commemorate the anniversary of the Polytechnic Uprising.

Demonstrators marched from central Athens to the US embassy with flags and banners, as police monitored in riot gear.

The 1973 Athens Polytechnic uprising occurred during the so-called Regime of the Colonels from 1967 to 1974, where at least twenty-four civilians were killed in clashes while hundreds were injured.

The uprising began on November 14, escalating into an open revolt that finished in bloodshed in the early morning of November 17.

While the revolt was suppressed it is credited with leading to the eventual collapse of the military government the following year, with the date being marked by demonstrations during the day, with clashes often breaking out between police and protesters later in the night.

SOT, Pavlos Antonopoulos, Union member (Greek): “Freedom is not the only message of the Polytechnic Uprising, social justice is too. Bread, education, freedom and national independence were the basic slogans of that time.”

SOT, Katerina Giannoulia, Union member: “The Polytechnic Uprising marked the beginning of a period when workers, youth and women claimed labor and feminist rights. We maintained these rights until recently, but they are now being taken away from us and they want us to forget them.”

SOT, Kleon Gregoriadis, demonstrator: “We are here because we won’t allow Democracy in Greece to go into quarantine. They are trying to do this during the last two years. The Polytechnic Uprising is now more timely than ever, because democratic rights of the Greek people are being restricted.”
