Violence broke out in front of Greece’s Ministry of Education in Athens, Friday, as students protested coronavirus health protocols in schools, culminating in demonstrators hurling projectiles at the government building.

Young protesters could be seen throwing stones and other objects, while security personnel guarded the site from inside the gates. Earlier, peaceful protesters had marched on the building, with one teacher saying the demonstrations were called to drive forward “necessary safety measures” for safeguarding education in Greece.

The students demand the Greek government offer “substantial” protections against knock-on effects of COVID-19. The central slogan of the Athens Student Coordinating Committee which organised the demonstration is “thousands of cases, nowhere, we want schools safe and open.”

SOT, Nikos Dardalis, teacher (Greek): “We, teachers, and thousands of students demonstrating here today, demand the necessary safety measures to be taken, in order for the educational procedure to be carried out in a safe and rightful manner.”
