Groups of protesters rallied in Athens on Monday to mark the 13th death anniversary of teenager Alexandros Grigoropoulos, who was killed by police.
Participants could be seen marching towards parliament with red flags, where they were met with police in riot gear.
“Today, more than ever, we are seeing an escalation of police repression and they want to establish police in universities. Students are demanding that the murderers of Alexis Grigoropoulos do not step foot into our universities,” said demonstrator Dimitra Veletza.
Grigoropoulos was killed in 2008 by two police officers who were involved in an argument with a group of teenagers in central Athens’ Exarchia district. The officers were found guilty of murder and of acting as an accomplice respectively.
Grigoropoulos’s death resulted in large protests throughout Greece, and solidarity demonstrations around the world. His death is marked every year in several cities across the country, often resulting in violent clashes.
